Bellefonte Shines on Small Business Saturday
Not long after the Thanksgiving dishes are washed and the pie is all gone, a whole slew of Americans will be tightening their belts and heading out into the chilly November night to line up outside of big box stores and malls all across the land. Black Friday (or Black Thursday Night, if we want to be perfectly honest) is coming. Maybe that's part of your holiday tradition. If it is, you're certainly not alone. The National Retail Federation has done the math and reports that something like 100 million people will hit the stores to shop for bargains on the Friday after Turkey Day. .
That's right, you heard me. 100 MILLION people. That's basically everyone, isn't it? At least it sure seems like it if you've ever braved the Black Friday madness. Lots of times it seems as if all 100 million of them are in front of you at the check-out line.
Around these parts, though, it's the Saturday after Thanksgiving that's really starting to make waves.
Because Saturday is now officially known as Small Business Saturday. Not just here in Centre County, but everywhere. And if you think about it for a moment, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania may just be the most quintessential small business town in the US of A. After all, this town is absolutely loaded with small, independent businesses. So much so that it harkens back to the kind of place where your grandparents (and their grandparents before them) did all of their holiday shopping. That's something to consider in this day and age of swarming crowds, massive chain stores, and internet shopping from your Lazy Boy.
Seriously, how many towns can you think of where you could basically be shopping in a scene straight out of It's a Wonderful Life? That may sound a bit far-fetched at first, but consider what I'm saying. Remember Bedford Falls? You do, right? Now do you remember Jimmy Stewart walking down those festive small town streets? Well how many places do you know like that? Doesn't Bellefonte seem like one of the only ones left?
How many other places have you been recently where you find yourself popping in and out of mom-and-pop antique shops and jewelry stores, looking at books and records one minute, and then one-of-a-kind furniture the next? Where else can you buy a smart phone on one corner and use it to take photos on another corner at the local art museum?
And how many of your holiday shopping trips lately brought you to a place where you had your choice of family-run joints to warm up in, to sip a good cup of coffee, have a glass of wine or eat a fantastic hot lunch that hasn't been sitting under a french fry light for the past five hours?
Not many, huh?
Then there's Bellefonte.
Small Business Saturday is the perfect time to support town and all of those great people who operate businessess in the area. Independently-owned shops and markets are an endangered species, there's no question about that. More and more vanish every year, and once they're gone we'll be saying goodbye to the kind of Christmas shopping experience that will only exist in old movies. Maybe that's inevitable, I don't know. But for now. we're among the lucky ones that still have the chance to purchase wonderful gifts and eat darn good food from local people who depend on us to keep a good thing going.
Skip the malls and the chains for a day. Come shop in Bellefonte.
