Bellefonte in Bloom: Project Daffodil
seeks to enhance the beauty of Bellefonte and to promote it as a tourist destination by planting 30,000 bulbs a year for a five-year period.

The first planting of 30,000 bulbs took place in the fall of 2004; this task was accomplished with the support of many volunteers. The initial planting focused on the higher-visibility streets and roads (the so-called gateways) to Bellefonte, the waterfront area including Talleyrand Park, and the downtown. The rational of this approach is based on the realization that Bellefonte’s attraction to visitors is based on a Victorian sense of style and both natural and architectural beauty. Volunteers have, for years worked tirelessly to preserve both. Project Daffodil builds on the work of those who came before and seeks a relatively low cost, high impact addition to the visual beauty of Bellefonte and the surrounding areas.

As the project has matured, private property owners have planted daffodils in large numbers, the Borough has found more public spaces for plantings, and the surrounding townships have joined in the project. Eventually, we can envision the impact of Project Daffodil spreading across a large part of Centre County, giving not only Bellefonte but the entire area another attraction for visitors.

Spring 2007 saw 90,000 daffodils blooming in and around Bellefonte.

Fall 2007 a final 11,000 bulbs were planted bringing the total planted to 101,000.

Watch for information on the Daffodil Drive this spring and to find nearly 200,000 daffodils planted from the Bellefonte to the Penn State campus.

This project was made possible, in large part, through a grant from the cultural, historical and recreational assets apportionment of the Centre County hotel room tax initiative provided by the Centre County Board of Commissioners and Central PA Convention and Visitors Bureau.
